This picture was taken from my backyard last night. Our view from the deck, looking back towards LA Crest foothills you could see the smoke from the Cajon pass fire and all around us the wind was billowing, there was a ring of thunder, lightening and this beautiful rainbow.

We had a friend visiting from NY and we answered, “of course, this is typical Los Angeles,” even though he knew better.

Jeremy took this picture and I’m so glad he did. (thanks JZ)

CDC used social media to find bacteria causing Legionnaires’ disease in Playboy Mansion’s grotto

Pretty awesome Centers for Disease Control and Prevention slide deck about the use of social media to help scientists track down the source of the bacteria legionella pneumophila at the Playboy Mansion.

Dr. Caitlin Reed at a conference of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta … said social media were helpful in the disease investigation, which helped investigators identify the outbreak quickly, enabling them to receive responses quickly from attendees, who had traveled from 30 countries; and allowed for the issuing of speedy recommendations for patients to receive lab testing.
